About Gulf Islands

The Gulf Islands Geographical Indication (GI) is a unique and intimate wine region nestled along the southern coast of British Columbia. Scattered across an archipelago in the Strait of Georgia, the Gulf Islands benefit profoundly from the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean. The surrounding waters create a temperate maritime climate with mild winters and cool, sunny summers, fostering ideal conditions for crafting elegant, cool-climate wines. While this is one of British Columbia’s smallest wine regions, it stands out for its distinct character and commitment to artisanal winemaking.

Key grape varieties grown in the Gulf Islands include Pinot Gris, Ortega, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer for whites, while Pinot Noir is the most prominent red variety. These grapes thrive in the region’s cool, ocean-moderated conditions, producing wines with vibrant acidity, expressive aromatics, and finesse. Ortega and Gewürztraminer, with their tropical fruit and floral notes, have become signature varieties for the region. Pinot Gris offers crisp, mineral-driven wines. Pinot Noir excels in the cool climate, delivering delicate red fruit, subtle spice, and a silky texture.

The terroir of the Gulf Islands is as distinctive as its wines. The region’s soils are a mix of glacial till, sandstone, and marine sediment, shaped over millennia by glacial and coastal activity. These well-draining soils, gentle slopes, and varied microclimates provide excellent conditions for vine growth and flavour concentration. The island settings further enhance the terroir, with ocean breezes helping maintain steady temperatures and reduce disease pressure, allowing minimal intervention in the vineyards.

Wines from the Gulf Islands truly reflect their coastal origins, offering a harmony of freshness, elegance, and complexity. The region’s small-scale, hands-on approach to winemaking ensures each bottle captures the unique sense of place that defines this GI. Whether enjoying a crisp Ortega or a refined Pinot Noir, Gulf Islands wines offer an intimate and unforgettable expression of British Columbia’s diverse viticultural landscape.
