About East Kelowna Slopes

The East Kelowna Slopes Sub-GI, nestled on the eastern hillsides of Kelowna in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, is a renowned wine-growing region celebrated for its cool-climate wines. This GI is defined by the escarpment overlooking Mission Creek and the flood plain be-tween Mission Creek and Bellevue Creek. Perched at elevations ranging from 450 to 650 metres above sea level, this Sub-GI benefits from a longer, slower-growing season, allowing grapes to develop intense flavours while retaining their natural acidity. Specific vineyards situated close enough to Okanagan Lake benefit from its moderating effects, which help regulate temperatures and extend the growing season. The steep slopes and diverse vineyard aspects, primarily south and southwest-facing, provide optimal sun exposure and excellent drainage, fostering ideal conditions for producing high-quality wines.

This Sub-GI is known for its aromatic whites and elegant reds, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as flagship varieties. Pinot Noir is the most planted variety and thrives on these cooler slopes, producing wines with vibrant red fruit, earthy undertones, and refined structure. White varieties make up 70% of the planted vineyard area. Chardonnay from East Kelowna Slopes show-cases a balance of crisp citrus and apple flavours, often complemented by minerality and texture. Riesling is another standout, offering zesty acidity, citrus, and stone fruit notes, while Gewürztraminer delivers spicy, floral flavours with a refreshing finish. Sparkling wine production also flourishes here, with the cool climate yielding base wines of exceptional finesse and brightness.

The soils of East Kelowna Slopes are a combination of glacial deposits, sandy loams, and silty clays, shaped by millennia of glacial activity. These soils are well-draining, encouraging deep root systems that help vines access essential minerals and nutrients. The elevated position of the vineyards further enhances the terroir, as cooler temperatures promote the development of complex flavours and aromatic intensity. The varied slopes and aspects create microclimates within the sub-GI, adding diversity and nuance to the wines crafted here.

Wines from the East Kelowna Slopes sub-GI beautifully express the region’s cool-climate char-acter and distinctive terroir. From refined Pinot Noir and mineral-driven Chardonnay to crisp Riesling and elegant sparkling wines, each bottle reflects the harmony of its elevated slopes and the skill of its winemakers. The East Kelowna Slopes offers wine lovers a taste of a region where elevation, aspect, and soil converge to create wines of remarkable balance and complexi-ty.
