The Lake Country Sub-GI, the northernmost sub-region of the Okanagan Valley, is a rising star celebrated for its vibrant, aromatic wines. Nestled above the eastern shores of Okanagan Lake, this 20 KM, picturesque region benefits from the lake’s moderating influence, which tempers temperature extremes and extends the growing season. The area’s higher elevation than much of the Okanagan creates a cooler climate ideal for growing grapes that retain crisp acidity and expressive aromatics.
Lake Country is particularly well-known for its elegant Pinot Noir wines and aromatic whites, including Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer. Riesling from this region shines with zesty citrus, green apple, and stony mineral notes, often showing off a vibrant balance of acidity and sweetness. Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris bring lush floral aromas and ripe stone fruit flavours. Pinot Noir benefits from the cool climate, offering delicate red berry and earthy tones with refined structure.
Lake Country’s terroir is shaped by its glacial history. The soils are a mix of sandy loam, silts, gravelly deposits, and clay, providing excellent drainage and encouraging deep root systems. The varied soils and the area’s elevation, which ranges from 400 to 600 metres, allow for slower ripening and more nuanced flavour development in the grapes. The cooler climate and well-drained soils combine to produce fresh, aromatic wines full of character.
In addition to its wine quality, Lake Country offers breathtaking landscapes of rolling vineyards, dramatic cliffs, and stunning lake views. This serene setting provides the perfect backdrop for crafting wines that truly reflect the region’s unique qualities.
