The Skaha Bench Sub-GI is a rising star in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. It is known for producing elegant and balanced wines that reflect its unique location. Situated on the eastern shores of Skaha Lake, just south of Penticton, this sub-region benefits significantly from its lakeside position. Skaha Lake is vital in moderating temperatures, keeping the vineyards warm during the cooler months and tempering the intense summer heat. A long growing season allows grapes to ripen slowly and develop vibrant, concentrated flavours.
Skaha Bench is home to diverse grape varieties, with Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah leading the charge for reds and Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc standing out among the whites. The Merlots from this area are often plush and approachable, with ripe red fruit and soft tannins, while Pinot Noir thrives thanks to the region’s cool nights, which help maintain its signature elegance and bright acidity. Syrah lovers will appreciate the region’s take on this bold variety, showcasing peppery spice and savoury notes alongside lush dark fruit. Chardonnay and Pinot Gris reflect the region’s finesse, offering crisp, refreshing wines with layers of orchard fruit and a touch of minerality.
The 10 KM long terroir of Skaha Bench is defined by its glacial origins. The soils here are a mix of gravelly sands and silts, with patches of glacial till and rocky outcrops that provide excellent drainage. This encourages deep root growth and forces vines to work harder, producing exceptional depth and complexity wines. The west-facing slopes of Skaha Bench also mean the vineyards have long, frost-free periods and receive abundant sunshine throughout the day, further contributing to the ripe, expressive character of the wines.
Skaha Bench’s balance of natural beauty and winemaking potential truly sets it apart. The rolling hills and terraced vineyards offer sweeping views of Skaha Lake and the surrounding valley, creating an inspiring backdrop for crafting world-class wines.
