The Summerland Valleys Sub-GI is a dynamic and diverse wine region defined by its high elevation vineyards and varied valley landscapes. This Sub-GI encompasses two distinct valleys: Garnet Valley and Prairie Valley, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines crafted here. The cooler climate at these elevated sites, ranging between 450 and 700 metres above sea level, allows for a slower ripening period, resulting in wines with fresh acidity, vibrant aromatics, and refined structure.
Summerland Valleys is well-suited to a diverse range of grape varieties and wine styles and is home to some of the highest elevation vineyard land in the Okanagan Valley. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive in these elevated sites, producing elegant wines with bright fruit flavours and minerality. Aromatic whites like Kerner and Gewürztraminer are equally at home, offering crisp, refreshing profiles with citrus, floral, and stone fruit notes. The cool-climate conditions also make Summerland Valleys ideal for sparkling wine production, with base wines high in acidity and structured for finesse. Additionally, the region’s unique conditions support Icewine production, with frozen grapes harvested in the winter months yielding rich, concentrated dessert wines with vibrant sweetness and acidity.
The soils of the Summerland Valleys are a mix of sandy loams, glacial till, and silty clays, shaped by centuries of glacial activity and erosion. These well-draining soils encourage deep root growth, enhancing the grapes’ concentration and complexity of flavours. Many vineyards are positioned on south and southeast facing slopes, maximizing sun exposure during the growing season while benefiting from cooling breezes, which help maintain the bright acidity that is a hallmark of the region’s wines.
The Summerland Valleys Sub-GI captures the essence of high-elevation winemaking with a focus on precision, purity, and a strong connection to its cool-climate terroir. From elegant sparkling wines and aromatic whites to structured Pinot Noir and luxurious ice wines, the wines of this region reflect the harmonious interplay between nature and craftsmanship. Each bottle tells the story of a unique growing environment and the artistry of the winemakers who bring it to life.
