About Kootenays

The Kootenays Geographical Indication (GI) is one of British Columbia’s most scenic and emerging wine regions, situated in the southeastern corner of the province. Nestled among the Kootenay region’s rugged mountains and tranquil valleys, this GI is defined by its unique location and cool climate. Kootenay Lake, one of the largest lakes in British Columbia, plays a significant role in moderating the area’s climate, helping to extend the growing season and reduce frost risks, making viticulture possible in this picturesque yet challenging environment.

Grape varieties that thrive in the Kootenays are predominantly cool climate varietals. White grapes such as Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer excel here, offering crisp, aromatic wines with bright acidity and fresh fruit flavours. Pinot Noir is a prominent choice among reds, producing elegant wines with delicate red fruit, earthy undertones, and silky textures. The region also has a strong connection to hybrid grapes like Maréchal Foch, which is well-suited to the cooler climate and shorter growing season. Maréchal Foch yields dark, robust wines with notes of black fruit, spice, and a hint of smokiness, adding a distinctive element to the Kootenays’ wine portfolio.

The terroir of the Kootenays is shaped by the region’s mountainous landscape and glacial history. The soils are primarily composed of glacial till, sandy loams, and silty deposits, which offer excellent drainage and encourage deep root systems. The vineyards, often located on slopes and benches near Kootenay Lake, benefit from ample sunlight and cool breezes, creating a balance that allows grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavours. The high elevation of many vineyard sites also enhances the acidity and structure of the wines, lending them a distinctive character that reflects the unique geography.

Wines from the Kootenays reflect the harmony of the region’s natural beauty and the dedication of its winemakers. Each bottle captures the essence of this unique GI, from crisp, aromatic whites to robust Maréchal Foch and elegant Pinot Noirs. As one of British Columbia’s smaller wine regions, the Kootenays offer a boutique wine experience that highlights the artistry and innovation of local producers, making it an exciting destination for wine enthusiasts eager to explore the diversity of BC’s wine landscape.
