About Lillooet

The Lillooet Geographical Indication (GI) is a dynamic and emerging wine region located in the southern interior of British Columbia. Situated along the Fraser River and nestled against the Coast Mountains, Lillooet is characterized by its dramatic landscape and unique growing conditions. Lillooet shares many climatic similarities with the Okanagan Valley, including long, hot summers and cooler nights that are ideal for developing flavourful grapes with balanced acidity. While relatively new to grape growing, the region has quickly made a name for itself with its high quality wines and promising terroir.

Lillooet is home to a range of grape varieties, with both whites and reds thriving in its warm yet balanced climate. Popular white varieties include Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, known for their vibrant fruit expression and refreshing acidity. Among red grapes, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Merlot have shown great potential, producing wines with ripe fruit, soft tannins, and elegant structure. The long growing season allows for optimal ripening, resulting in wines that are both expressive and balanced. The region also shows promise for rosé and sparkling wine styles, leveraging its cooler nights to retain freshness and vibrancy in the grapes.

The terroir of Lillooet is shaped by its rugged geography and glacial history. The soils are a mix of glacial till, alluvial deposits, and gravelly loams, providing excellent drainage and promoting concentrated flavours in the grapes. Many vineyards are planted on gentle slopes, which enhance sun exposure and air drainage, reducing the risk of frost and disease. The Fraser River plays a moderating role, helping regulate temperatures and creating a hospitable viticulture environment. These elements combine to produce wines with a distinct sense of place, reflecting the unique characteristics of this burgeoning wine region.

As one of British Columbia’s smaller GIs, Lillooet is a testament to the innovative spirit of the province’s wine industry. The region’s small-scale, hands-on approach to winemaking ensures that each bottle reflects the passion and dedication of its producers. From crisp, aromatic whites to structured and elegant reds, the wines of Lillooet offer a fresh and exciting perspective on BC’s viticultural potential. With its stunning scenery, favourable growing conditions, and exceptional wines, Lillooet is a region worth watching as it continues to establish itself in the world of wine.
