About Golden Mile Bench

The Golden Mile Bench Sub-GI, located on the western side of the southern Okanagan Valley south of Oliver, holds a special place in British Columbia’s wine history as the province’s first officially designated Sub-GI. This prestigious recognition reflects the distinctiveness of its terroir, which is defined by its east-facing slopes, ideal for capturing the gentle morning sun and experiencing cooler afternoons. This unique aspect contributes to developing balanced, elegant wines with vibrant acidity and refined flavours. The Sub-GI benefits from the geological influence of Mount Kobau, whose formations have shaped the region’s soils and slopes over millennia.

Elevations in the Golden Mile Bench range from approximately 300 to 600 metres above sea level, creating a range of microclimates well-suited to various grape varieties. The east-facing slopes maximize sunlight during the early part of the day, allowing grapes to ripen gradually while avoiding intense afternoon heat. Merlot plays a vital role in the Golden Mile Bench Sub-GI, thriving in the region’s well-draining soils and moderate climate to produce wines with rich dark fruit flavours, supple tannins, and a signature balance that showcases the terroir’s elegance and complexity. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah also thrive here. The production of high-quality white wines, such as Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, highlights the region’s ability to craft wines with finesse and complexity.

The soils in the Golden Mile Bench are a mix of gravelly glacial deposits, sandy loams, and silt, shaped by glacial retreat and ancient river activity. These well-draining soils, combined with the region’s moderate slopes, encourage deep root growth and enhance the concentration of flavours in the grapes. The geological formations of Mount Kobau have also contributed volcanic and mineral-rich components to the soils, adding to the wines’ character. The region’s slightly cooler climate, influenced by its elevation and afternoon shade, helps maintain natural acidity and balance, particularly in aromatic whites and structured reds.

Wines from the Golden Mile Bench are celebrated for their elegance, vibrancy, and reflection of the terroir. From crisp, mineral-driven whites to supple, fruit-forward reds with refined tannins, each bottle tells the story of this historic and geographically distinct Sub-GI. The Golden Mile Bench continues to be a benchmark for quality and innovation in the Okanagan Valley, offering wine lovers a chance to experience the harmony of nature and craftsmanship that defines this exceptional region.
