About Okanagan Falls

The Okanagan Falls Sub-GI is a gem within British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, known for its breathtaking landscapes and exceptional wines. Okanagan Falls sub-GI is nestled between Skaha Lake to the north and Vaseux Lake to the south. This compact yet diverse wine region’s unique microclimate sets it apart. Lakes moderate temperatures year-round, acting as natural air conditioners during the summer heat and insulating the vineyards in cooler months. The temperate climate of Okanagan Falls allows grapes to ripen at a steady pace, preserving vibrant acidity and expressive fruit character in the wines.

Okanagan Falls is particularly celebrated for its Burgundian varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris. Pinot Noir thrives here, thanks to the combination of warm summer days and cool evenings, which allow the grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining fresh acidity. Chardonnay from this sub-GI is equally impressive, often balancing a rich texture with bright citrus and mineral notes. Meanwhile, Pinot Gris showcases the region’s ability to produce pristine clarity and freshness.

The terroir of Okanagan Falls is as diverse as it is fascinating. The soils contain glacial deposits, sands and gravel, each imparting unique characteristics to the wines. Vineyards planted in sandy, well-draining soils often produce wines with purity and finesse, while those rooted in more mineral-rich terrains exude structure and depth. The interplay of these soils, combined with the region’s sunshine-filled days and lake-moderated temperatures, results in wines with a distinct sense of place.

A fun fact about the Okanagan Falls sub-GI is the topography. Distinct slopes and decompressions create a landform known as ‘kettled.’ This ‘kettled’ terrain allows vineyards to be located on all slope positions.

Beyond its technical merits, Okanagan Falls is a place of beauty and inspiration. The rolling vineyards, dramatic rock bluffs, and shimmering lake views create an unforgettable backdrop for exploring the wines.
